Turn On The Red Light

A cunning madam,
a closeted politician,
a crossdressing merchant...

Diamond Street,
a new opera conceived from
Hudson's history and fables,
premieres tonight
upstairs in the magnificent
unrestored hall of the
Hudson Opera House.

Such rich material, just oozing with possibility for at least an entertaining if not a brilliant operetta. It was an atonal, grating piece of music that made the brief hour seem interminable. The storyline was utterly predictable and bland and the characters were cardboard. With such a talented creative team I have to wonder if draining hudson's history of color and flavor was an intentional device, but I cannot decipher its purpose. I applaud the opera house's hard work in bringing this magnificent space back to life and I was proud to be part of the audience on this special evening but I hope the next time I'm there I find more than architecture to appreciate.
